Here you see images from the garden my students and I have created. It is astounding how few children have turly touched the earth and know first hand where and how their food grows. In this garden children grow organic greens, vegetables, and flowers from seeds they start in our greenhouse. From there they transplant out into the garden to observe and nurture to maturity. By mid-winter and early spring these lucky kids are feasting upon the freshest and most vital food. They even learn how to make their own potato chips from Yukon gold and all blue potatoes.
On another note, after the tragedy of 9-11-02, the students built a set of twin towers upon which we would grow flowers honoring the souls of all those innocent people who were sacrificed that day. Since then thousands upon thousands of innocent people have had their lives destroyed: women, children, and old men (this number does not include soldiers) who happen to live in the Middle East, so each year we have planted many more flowers.
As an educator, I am outraged that the priorities of our nation's leaders seem to result in a lot of children bleeding rather that learning how to read. We live in the richest nation in history, yet 28% of American children live in poverty. In Canada, that number is only 7% and Japan 4%. Our schools are overcrowded with serious budget problems, yet our leaders spend billions upon billions making weapons and using them to destroy the lives of so many who happen to live where an "evil" leader rules or oil is very abundant. What was spent in just one month during our invasion of Iraq could have funded all the schools of New York for one year. Where are our priorities? When will we get leadership who understands that an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth only leaves the world hungry and blind?
